THE ITINERARY

Day 1: Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay

The first day of your cruise is an introduction to the amazing scenery of Halong Bay and its southern sister; Lan Ha Bay. Cruising through Halong Bay will literally take your breath away, as we pass famous spots like Thien Cung and Me Cung caves, plus Soi Sim and Titov islands. Also located in the Gulf of Tonkin, to the south of Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay and the Ho Ba Ham islets offer tranquility and nature at its best, and a guided kayaking tour or a refreshing swim in the Bay’s emerald waters are two of the best ways to enjoy them.

Day 2: Cat Ba Island and Bai Tu Long Bay

Cat Ba Island is famous for its national park, with more than half the island designated. This island, far and away the largest in the Gulf of Tonkin, is covered by a dense rainforest home to numerous indigenous species of flora and fauna. The secluded village of Viet Hai, situated in the middle of this pristine environment, is easily accessible thanks to a short walk or cycling trip  and is where we are developing an organic farm which you can visit.

Bai Tu Long Bay, located a little further east of Halong Bay, is the most remote area of your voyage. The exceptional scale and variety of the geological rock formations in this area are sure to make this a future destination for cruising in the Gulf of Tonkin. A relaxing rowing boat tour through the floating village of Vung Vieng and cruising into the geological park of this bay will definitely be delightful moments for you to remember.

Day 3: Halong Bay

Halong Bay, designated a UNESCO world heritage site for its limestone rock formations, is home to about 2,000 isles and islets of different shapes and sizes, creating a truly breathtaking seascape. At its heart is the highest concentration of limestone rocks in the area and caves and grottoes abound. One of the most beautiful is the Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave. Exceptional because of its size and the shapes which have been created by millions of years of erosion, the Surprise Cave is not to be missed.

Dining

Uniquely located on the spacious terrace deck of The Au Co, and designed along Feng Shui principles, our restaurant and bar offer the perfect spaces for guests to connect with their surroundings while savouring an incredible array of fresh dishes or simply relaxing with a drink.

While designed in very different styles, both the restaurant and the bar have been created to ensure the ultimate in comfort, luxury and style.

Restaurant

The elegant and luxurious The Au Co Restaurant has been carefully arranged according to the generating principle of Wu Xing, with the dining room featuring both wood and metal elements. On arrival, guests will notice that the interior elements of the wooden furniture and polished wooden floor help air flow, harmonizing the natural light and wind with the surrounding landscape and mountains, giving guests the feeling of being immersed in nature, satisfying the senses of sight and taste.

Meanwhile, metal elements in the dining room are minimized by reducing kitchen and other electrical appliances in the room, which would just distract from the meal. According to the principle that water nourishes wood, the sight of the Gulf’s water and the sound of soft music are simply used to create a calm, gentle atmosphere, which should stimulate guests’ appetites.

The Bar

The terrace deck of The Au Co Cruise features an open-air bar; again designed with the Feng Shui principle of Yang - Movement - Flexibility, as a counterpoint to the Yin - neutral - Earth element. The spacious bar, named as Lan Ha Bar, with its light rattan furniture are the perfect place to relax and while away your day accompanied by a range of food, beverages, and snacks. Alternatively, Lan Ha Bar is the place to meet after a busy day of activities for a pre-dinner cocktail as the sun sets over the Gulf of Tonkin.

Lan Ha Bar stocks a full complement of aperitifs, wines, cocktails, drinks and snacks, and serves visitors until late at night.

If guests are seeking more privacy and comfort each cabin has its own in-cabin refrigerator, which we can stock with your choice of beverages

Activities

The Gulf of Tonkin is the perfect place to experience a wide range of activities, from biking to kayaking, from swimming to squid fishing. Whichever you choose you will do so surrounded by some of the most dramatic and exciting scenery, heightening your sense of adventure.

Kayaking

This is not only a healthy sporting activity but also one of the best and easiest ways to explore the magnificent caves, lagoons and World Heritage sights of Halong Bay; as well as the more unspoilt, neighbouring bays of Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long. Famous for its thousands of islands and islets spread throughout the wide bays, our small kayaks for 1-2 (and even 3) people are not only easy to control and great exercise but also offer a fresh and interesting perspective on the delightful scenery surrounding you.

Biking on Cat Ba Island

Taking a leisurely bike ride through the scenic landscape of Cat Ba National Park is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of this wonderful island. Cat Ba is the largest island in the Gulf of Tonkin. Indeed, the Lonely Planet described Cat Ba as being ‘rugged, craggy and jungle-clad, it is straight out of Jurassic Park’.

Swimming and snorkelling

‘Really nice and refreshing’ is how passengers often describe wallowing in the placid waters of Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay. Indeed, this is an experience not to be missed. Whether you choose to swim or snorkel, The Au Co staff are always on hand to ensure your safety and make sure you have an enjoyable time in the cool, dark waters of the Gulf of Tonkin.

Squid fishing

Sleepless in Halong? We have the cure! As night falls, The Au Co’s staff will hand out fishing rods and guide you in this interesting pastime, which could easily occupy an entire evening. Be patient, focus, and soon, with a flick of the wrist, you can celebrate your very first catch! And of course, your ‘reward’ is to see the fruits of your labour turned into one of many inspired dishes by The Au Co’s team of chefs.

Wellness

Cruising aboard The Au Co you are likely to experience a sense of calm and well-being. But to make sure we have also added spa and jacuzzi facilities, for those simply seeking relaxation, or those wishing to unwind after a day packed with adventurous activities.

Spa

For complete stress relief, why not pamper yourself with a therapeutic massage either in the tranquility of the Spa room or in the open-air Spa area – drifting off into bliss as the cruise drifts along.

Jacuzzi

After an exciting day of adventurous activities and cultural excursions what better way to relax and unwind than in The Au Co’s open-air Jacuzzi. Feel any aches and pains drift away as you sip a cocktail while taking in the fantastic views of the seascape as you voyage at sunset.

Culture

The Au Co is designed to allow our passengers to get a true sense of Vietnam and experience a taste of the Orient. While aboard, there are a range of activities for you to discover and experience Vietnamese culture for yourself, everything from Tai Chi to cultural talks, cooking lessons to fine dining. Off-deck, there are plenty more opportunities to learn more about the local culture and history and also to engage with some of the local communities who inhabit this world-renowned landscape.

Cooking class

If you are interested in learning more about Vietnamese cuisine, our Vietnamese cooking class and tour may well interest you. Our cooking teachers, always a team of two – a chef experienced in Vietnamese cuisine and a team leader, many of whom have practiced abroad and who speak excellent English, will bring their vast experience to bear, sharing their excellent skills in this fun but informative class. Not only will you have many opportunities to taste Vietnamese dishes but you can also widen your knowledge of Vietnamese culture.

Tai Chi

Practising Tai Chi first thing in the morning with our professional trainer is a great way to start your day; clearing your mind and giving you energy for the rest of the day to discover both the beautiful Gulf of Tonkin as well as all the activities available on board The Au Co. This ancient Chinese martial art is celebrated both for its defence training and also for its health benefits.

Tea Ceremony

At the end of a busy day cruising and exploring the many sights of Halong Bay and the Gulf of Tonkin, you may well be curious to learn more about this fascinating area, the country and its people.

At sundown on the first day, a tea ceremony will be held, inviting you to taste and experience the range of Vietnamese teas on offer and giving you a broader understanding of their significance in Vietnamese culture.

Local touch

As The Au Co has a more leisurely schedule, you will have more time to connect with some of the Gulf of Tonkin locals, adding to your lifetime experience. As part of our unique itinerary, we will pass local villages where you will be able to observe, and even take part in, some of the locals’ daily activities.

On Cat Ba Island, you can visit Viet Hai village and see people working on the rice paddies, picking fruit and even making local rice wine.

We will also travel to the more remote Bai Tu Long Bay to visit Vung Vieng Floating Village. Touring this fascinating village on bamboo boats, you can see how local families survive on the water, fishing.

This was our first cruise and simply a great experience. We had actually booked their sister cruise Bhaya but were switched to this one due to the schedule, we had wanted the two night cruise vs the one night.

I was soo glad we made the switch. While the locations or activities might be the same, the boat, crew, food were perfect. The crew is very helpful, always around and checking in on you. The food was always a 5 course meal, and very good. There were a few things off, with a longer wait at the marina with some passengers getting confused, and at one point a tv crew filming everything. But they were very open to your comments and adjusted if you had any problems. I hope all our future cruises are just like this one!

Wow! Au Co is truely a 5 star experience, the cruise exceeded our expectations. The 3 day itinerary is perfect, you could do as little or as much as you want. What made the experience memorable was the crew onboard. You couldn wipe the smiles off their faces, they have a geniune passion for their jobs and enjoyed looking after people. As soon as you step onboard everything was taken care of and nothing was too much trouble. I have to mention the food, absolutely mouth watering! If you are going to Halong Bay, Au Co is the only way to experience this gorgeous World Heritage Site.

The entire trip totally exceeded expectations, from check in, to the transfer across and greeting on board, to the cabins activities and general style of the boat, it was truly perfect.

And then, there was the food. Oh boy!!! This is food heaven. Supurb, interesting, beautifully presented and served, it was a five star dining experience at each meal.

The days flew by, starting with early morning Thai Chi, swimming, biking on an island, cooking demonstrations before dinner and then some chill out time.

The accommodation was really comfortable, well appointed and very pretty cabins.

It was a privilege to sail with you and see beautiful Halong Bay.

From the moment we laid eyes on the boat, we knew something special was going to happen.. the biggest and best boat in Halong Bay it was intimidating other boats. We could not be happier with our 3 day / 2 night stay on the Au Co. The staff were wonderful, helpful and seemed genuinely engaged with all passengers. Our cabin had the wow factor wherever we turned, private terrace, large bathroom with bath (cabin 201), complimentary first use of mini bar was a nice touch too.
To say the food was good wouldn do the chef justice - 5 course lunch and dinner each representing an element of Taoism were delicious. My son who loves his food rated it a 10/10. Breakfast was a good selection in snuffed style even with egg station.
The staff were wonderful starting each meal with a song again my son enjoyed this. Their pride in what they do was evident to see.
Activities such as cycling, kayaking, swimming and walking through the spectacular Surprise Cave were included and worthwhile, we all slept well each night.
If you e thinking of a cruise in Haling Bay do yourself a davour, this is the one to do. I know when we come back we will be on the Au Co.
